THE LEMON PROJECT

As part of my Foundation Diploma in Art and Design I decided to choose a surface pattern brief. Here are the sheets that best summarise the creative process of desgining the surface pattern designs.

An initial sheets of observational drawings of the lemon. Exploring the colours, shapes and forms present in the humble lemon.

Here you can see the more refined shapes which I extracted from the initial observational drawing sheets.

The contextual research for this project consistent in researching surface pattern designers.

These are the two motifs which I used to make the repeat pattern.

I decided to use yellows and oranges together with a light blue as a contrasting colour to make the lemon segments ‘pop’. I used a white background as the pattern was for a Summer Spring collection and it would make it look lighter as white lifts colours.

As for the design on the right this was intended for ‘Formal Wear’. I mixed a light dusty pink combined with a navy blue.

Here are the final 3 designs.

Day wear (top left), night wear (bottom left) and formal wear (bottom right).

I decided not to use to remaining design (top right) as I thought the colours were more appropriate for an interior than for clothing.

I created the different colour schemes by altering the saturation of the hues and by reversing the colours. I used Illustrator and Paint to create all designs.
