AS ART: SELF PORTRAIT

I chose to work with the brief that required an expressive autobiographical self-portrait in any 2D or 3D media that also includes an element of metamorphosis. I first had the idea of basing my assignment around something that was important to me as a person and soon came to the conclusion that animal rights was a good choice as I care about how animals are treated and as a vegan I am aware of how animals are exploited for different alimentary industries and the suffering which comes with it.

I used scanned images of my own face in which I had tried to make my nose pig like, I used them as a starting point to build upon. The idea of using my face in what would be considered in a strange or non-attractive manner came from how Jenny Saville portrays facial expressions in her paintings. The scanned images of my face allowed me to have a visual feel to work from and so then came the idea of merging a pigs face or elements of a pigs face into my own face.

I borrowed a plastic muscle prototype from the biology department in the college. I used it to use the shape, form and structure of muscles. I used the scanned image of my face to extract colour schemes to use for the project.
