I chose to work in the theme of animal rights and I decided that seen as in previous projects I had enjoyed the process of creating surface pattern designs that I would work towards designing a series of patterns with the underlining theme of the motives used relating to the theme of animal rights.

I drew objects and features that I wanted to include in my patterns. I decided to create a drawing where I traced my hands and then filled with the pattern with the pattern of a cows fur. This was to symbolise how I feel about animals, that they are as equal as us humans, in the sense that I believe we don’t have the right to kill innocent animals.

I then drew a circle from which I had the blade of a knife come out, I drew patches of red in the knife, all this to represent the element of death and killing of animals.

The following work was created as part of the final major project for the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design that I completed earlier this year.

HANDS THAT MEAT

I filled in the hands with red biro, I made the lines resemble veins and the shapes of muscle as the project’s theme was animal rights, veins and muscle tissue are in both animals and humans it is one of the features that we have in common therefore I included that in my drawing.

I often use scanned images of myself in relation to animal right themed projects. In this scanned image I wanted to mimic the photos that I have seen of animals in slaughter houses. I decided to use this image as inspiration because to me it feels like someone (animal or human) is trapped and cannot scape, therefore trying to reflect how animals must feel before they are killed in slaughter houses.

All of the following design work was made by firstly scanning the original drawing which I used as a base to work from. I then used photoshop to modify the colours and illustrate to create the repeat patterns.
